6G and IoT: What the Wireless Future Looks Like After 5G
Every ten years, almost to the year, mobile networking reinvents itself. Voice in the eighties, text in the nineties, data at the millennium, smartphones around 2010, and 5G in 2019. The cadence makes the next date easy to predict: 6G, around 2030. But 6G isn't shaping up to be a faster pipe. The framework that defines it — the ITU's IMT-2030, adopted in November 2023 — is less about speed and more about the network learning to perceive : sensing objects that carry no radio, powering tags that carry no battery, covering the planet from orbit. The generations so far competed on connecting things. 6G is the first that wants to notice them. 🔮 The Short Version Six usage scenarios define 6G — three stretched from 5G (broadband, low latency, massive IoT) and three genuinely new: Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) — the network doubles as a distributed radar, reading its own reflections. Presence, falls, drones, forklifts — detected with no sensor deployed. Ubiquito...
